In many predominantly non-Muslim countries intense debates have focused on international relations with Muslim-majority states, but dilemmas of national policy and practice in incorporating domestic Muslim minorities have also provoked heated argument. Meanwhile, within predominantly Muslim societies, and within Muslim diasporas, relationships with non-Muslims have posed pressing questions about compatibility, antagonism or adaptation of beliefs, identities and customs. The essays forming this multidisciplinary collection analyse concerns arising from clashing perceptions of Muslims in the political and cultural spheres: the majority of chapters deal with non-Muslim representations of Muslims, but several chapters reverse the perspective by examining Muslims' own understandings of their relationships with non-Muslim societies.0.
<note type="statement of responsibility">edited by Christopher Flood Step.</note><note>Includes bibliographical references and index.</note><subject authority="lcsh"><topic>Muslims</topic><geographic>Non-Islamic countries</geographic></subject><subject authority="lcsh"><topic>Muslims</topic><topic>Public opinion</topic></subject><subject authority="lcsh"><topic>Islam and politics</topic></subject><subject authority="lcsh"><topic>Islam</topic><temporal>21st century</temporal></subject><subject authority="bisacsh"><topic>SOCIAL SCIENCE</topic><topic>Discrimination & Race Relations</topic></subject><subject authority="bisacsh"><topic>SOCIAL SCIENCE</topic><topic>Minority Studies</topic></subject><subject authority="fast"><topic>Islam</topic></subject><subject authority="fast"><topic>Islam and politics</topic></subject><subject authority="fast"><topic>Muslims</topic></subject><subject authority="fast"><topic>Muslims</topic><topic>Public opinion</topic></subject><subject authority="fast"><geographic>Non-Islamic countries</geographic></subject><subject authority="sao"><topic>Muslimer</topic></subject><subject authority="sao"><topic>Muslimer</topic><topic>attityder till</topic></subject><subject authority="sao"><topic>Islam och politik</topic></subject><subject><topic>Islam -- 21st century</topic></subject><subject><topic>Islam and politics</topic></subject><subject><topic>Muslims -- Non-Muslim countries</topic></subject><subject><topic>Muslims -- Public opinion</topic></subject>
