  <abstract>Al ruim honderd jaar bezoeken reizigers de bezetenheidscultus Candomblé in Bahia, Brazilië. Mattijs van de Port verkent de lange geschiedenis van deze ontmoetingen met de Afro-Braziliaanze wereld. Wat dachten deze bezoekers van de dansen, de bloedige initiatieriten, de mysterieuze geestesverschijning? Hoe verbonden zijn hun observaties met hun eigen leven? Van de Port laat ook zien hoe de gelovigen reageerden op deze overweldigende belangstelling. Cultleden en buitenstaanders grijpen de confrontatie met het mysterieuze aan om de beperkingen van hun eigen wereldbeelden te onderkennen.</abstract>
